The Vow of Nonviolence

Lord we take this vow of nonviolence as a sign of our covenant to co-create with You and others a world of justice and peace. We take this vow in our role as the disciples of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ our Lord.

VOW OF NONVIOLENCE

Lord I am aware that I must first acknowledge the violence of our own heart before I can be a person of nonviolence in imitation of Jesus Christ. I trust in your empowering and forgiving Spirit to give me the strength and courage to make this vow. I vow for one year to practice the nonviolence of Jesus manifested in his teaching, healing, suffering and death on the cross.

  • Before God the Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier, I vow to carry out in my life the love and example of Jesus
  • by being open to Your Spirit of peace and in seeking to be a peacemaker in my daily life;
  • by accepting the rejection and suffering at the hands of others and not retaliating in any form;
  • by refusing to strike others in the face of provocation and violence;
  • by using speech and gestures that are nonviolent;
  • by living simply so as not to scandalize the Body of Christ in my poor brothers and sisters and the creation;
  • by actively resisting evil and working nonviolently to abolish war and the causes of war from my own heart and from the face of the earth.

Abba, I trust in Your sustaining and empowering love and believe that just as You called me to this vow, so You will also provide Your abundant gracious presence to fulfill it.
