Principled
Negotiation
People: separate the
people from the problem
Interests: focus on interests, not positions
Options: generate a variety of possibilities before
deciding what to do
Criteria: Insist that the result be based on some objective
standard
Resolving Conflicts
Listen Actively: this happens while being attentive and
offering feedback usually by rephrasing the information to focus and clarify
Speak to be understood: use words that help to clarify and
are understood by the group. Take time to define any terms that others may not be familiar
with. The issue at hand is effective communication.
Speak for a purpose: do not argue for the sake of arguing,
Speak to a direct action or course of action.
Summarize major concerns for the group: then help move the
group into consensus.
