Leadership and
Power
Power- the capacity to act
effectively for the Gospel.
Types of power:
Nurturing power is a form of positive power. It is the
power of caring for others in such a way that we encourage their talents to be actualized.
It is the form of power that we see in Jesus compassion for the poor, sinners and
outcasts.
Shared Power is a form of power used to complement
or increase other peoples power. This is based on a win-win approach.
Exploitative power uses others as a means to an end.
People are used as objects for ones own ambitions. This denies the Imago Dei in each
person.
Manipulative power is used by others to control
through emotional, economic, physical ways that deny the free exercise of freedom.
Competitive power without restraint can lead to
brutality, a survival of the fittest. However; it can be used in a positive manner
by teasing out the gifts of others in competitive situations.
